The University of Nevada, Reno was established as a land-grant institution in 1874. Today the University is a public, comprehensive, multi-purpose institution offering over 70 undergraduate majors, 64 master's degree programs, and 33 doctoral programs through its ten schools and colleges and a four-year medical school.
The University has earned a reputation for superior research projects in a broad range of areas, and offers internships, an honors curriculum, study abroad, and many other special programs. University of Nevada, Reno students benefit from supportive services such as orientation for new students, academic advising, personal counseling, career planning and advising, and on-campus housing. A full spectrum of support services for international students, scholars, and their families is provided through the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS), including events and activities, assistance with immigration, employment and cultural issues, and help with acclimating to American academic life. The University sponsors over 100 clubs and organizations; sororities and fraternities; residence hall programming; and annual events such as Homecoming, Mackay Week, and Winter Carnival. Intercollegiate athletics and intramural sports are scheduled for both men and women students. The University of Nevada, Reno campus is located four blocks north of downtown Reno on a hill overlooking the city and holds 87 buildings on its attractive 255-acre campus. The area is known for its beauty and recreational resources. The cities of San Francisco and Sacramento, California, are within a few hours drive of the campus. |
