The first year of the full-time program revolves around a semester-long consulting project with a business client. Case-studies, new venture planning exercises and global study courses provide additional means for gaining first-hand management experience. These opportunities prepare Boston College MBAs to immediately contribute to an organizationÕs strategic objectives.

Global management issues and the role of technology in business are an integral part of the program. Supplementing core study, the innovative Management Practice sequence provides training in the critical skills and issues in contemporary management, including communication, team building and cross-functionality.

Financial Assistance

Graduate Assistantships and Scholarships

The Carroll School of Management offers a significant program of graduate assistantships and scholarships to full-time MBA and MSF classes. Assistantships and scholarships are merit-based awards. Awardees usually have two or more years of full-time work experience, 630 or above on the GMAT, 3.2 or above grade point average and a strong set of application materials.

NOTE: Interested applicants must submit with their application a current resume and a cover letter describing their skills and areas of interest. These materials must be submitted to the MBA program by March 1, 1999 for September admission. Graduate assistantships involve research or administrative duties in exchange for tuition remission.

Students are generally appointed to 8-,12-, or 16-hour per week assistantships. There are a limited number of assistantships available to both domestic and international applicants.

Eight-hour and twelve-hour per week assistantship awards are equal to 12 and 18 credit hours of tuition assistance per academic year, respectively. A sixteen-hour assistantship award is equal to 31 credit hours of tuition for first-year MBA students and 24 credit hours of tuition for second-year MBA students. A portion of assistantship awards is subject to tax. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit and vary in amount. Decisions regarding assistantships and scholarships are made in April and May.

Students who receive a scholarship or assistantship during the first year of the MBA program and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 are eligible for consideration for continuing support during the second year, subject to performance evaluation by their supervisor.

University-Administered Financial Aid

In addition to the assistantships and scholarships offered through the Carroll School of Management, the University Financial Aid Office offers a variety of programs to help students finance their education. Students should be aware that most loan programs charge an origination fee and should factor this into their financial planning.

Alternative Loans

There are many alternative loans available to international applicants. Any student may apply for these loans which are not federally subsidized. All require a credit check and most allow the student to defer interest and principal until after graduation (the interest is capitalized and added to the principal). International students must have a US citizen as a co-signer. Please contact the Financial Aid Office for applications and information about alternative loans.

Admission Requirements

International Students

All applicants who did their undergraduate coursework outside of the United States must have the equivalent of an American bachelor's degree (equivalency to be determined by the Graduate Dean of the School or the University Registrar). In addition, all students whose first language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). This requirement is waived for applicants who have completed a four-year course of study or have been enrolled for the past two years in a college or university in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia or New Zealand.

The minimum score on the TOEFL is 600. An official score report should be sent to the Wallace E. Carroll Graduate School of Management, Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467, United States. The TOEFL school code for the Carroll Graduate School of Management varies by program (please see below). If you have taken the TOEFL more than once, ETS must send the two most recent test results. Results prior to January 1997 are not valid. Applicants to the MBA program must take the TOEFL on or before the October 1998 test date for January 1999 admission, and before the March 1998 test date for September 1999 admission.

Accepted international applicants must provide financial certification for two years for the MBA program.

Application Deadlines

For international students applying to the MBA program, the deadline for the receipt of a complete application and TOEFL score is March 1, 1999.

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and Graduate Record Exam (GRE)

MBA applicants are required to take the GMAT. All current and previous results must be forwarded to the Carroll Graduate School of Management's Office of Admissions by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Only GMAT scores from January 1994 through April 1999 are valid. The GMAT school code for the Carroll Graduate School of Management MBA Program is 3083. Your application will not be reviewed if an invalid test score is submitted.

For full-time MBA applicants only: April 1, 1999, is the last date to take the GMAT and still be considered for admission in September 1999
