Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM) in Artificial Intelligence (EMAI)
The
Erasmus Mundus joint Master in Artificial Intelligence (EMAI) is a two-year (120 ECTS) Erasmus Mundus Joint Master founded by the European Commission that provides a comprehensive framework of theory and practice in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). .
The EMAI is based in four top academic institutions representing world-leading research in Europe: Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona (Spain), Sapienza University of Rome (Italy), Radboud University in Nijmegen (The Netherlands), and University of Ljubljana (Slovenia).
The rest of the consortium comprises the prestigious University College London (UCL) Centre for Artificial Intelligence and other AI research centres worldwide, as well as almost 20 industrial partners, including multinational companies and small and medium-sized enterprises.
The EMAI gives the students the foundational knowledge to explore key contextual areas and complex technical applications of AI systems. It offers a unique formation in the field, integrating machine learning and modern symbolic AI in theory, methods and applications. Hence, students learn not only to use AI technologies but also to develop new tools beyond the state of the art. This is a key competitive advantage that will provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills for successful professional development in a large number of sectors of the digital industry (ICT, cybersecurity, data science, robotics, digital health, renewable energy, etc.), as well as to continue a scientific career through a PhD programme.
EMAI accepts students with strong computer science, software engineering, and applied mathematics backgrounds. The main recommended entry profiles are students with a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, such as Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Physics, or equivalent.

About Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) in Barcelona, Radboud University in Nijmegen, University of Ljubljana, Sapienza Università di Roma
Pompeu Fabra University runs 27 undergraduate, 33 official masters and nine doctoral programs in social sciences and humanities, health and life sciences, and ICT and communication sciences.
The links among the three fields have contributed to new interdisciplinary initiatives targeting global challenges. UPF serves around 12.600 students, of whom 25% are international, a rate that rises to 40% in master’s degrees and 49% in PhD programs.
The University’s international profile starts with its faculty members; most of them have extensive international experience or are directly recruited abroad. This policy has helped make UPF a multilingual university with three working languages (Catalan, Spanish and English) for teaching and research.
UPF's high international profile significantly increased its capacity to attract researchers from competitive programs, such as the European Research Council (ERC).
UPF is the 1st Spanish university in the number of grants and has 176 research funded projects under the H2020 program.
The Engineering School at UPF was established in 1999 and is a young and energetic multidisciplinary department pushing to achieve excellence in areas such as Cognitive and Intelligent Systems, Audio-visual Technologies, Networks and Communications, Brain and Cognition, Computational Biology, and Biomedical Systems.
The School has one of the major internationalisation ratios among UPF departments, with 66% of international staff and 60% of international postgraduate students. DTIC is one of the two Spanish ICT university departments awarded the Maria de Maeztu excellence by the Spanish government for the quality and relevance of its pioneering scientific research and as Spain's top IT research concentration.
The School also counts on active collaborations worldwide, both in academia and industry, and institutions such as the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.
Sapienza Università di Roma is one of Italy's largest and oldest universities. It has established itself as one of Europe's most prestigious academic institutions in science and technology.
In 2021, the Centre for World University Rankings ranked Sapienza 113th worldwide and the top in Italy.
The EMAI is offered by the Dipartimento di Ingegneria Informatica Automatica e Gestionale Antonio Ruberti (DIAG), a multidisciplinary research and education centre that hosts more than 70 Sapienza faculties and 10 research labs from the School of Computer Science and Engineering. Basic research is the main goal of DIAG, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research, on applications that stimulate basic research, and with specific attention to technology transfer and dissemination of results. From a research perspective, DIAG has substantial experience in Big Data, Process Management and Mining, Artificial Intelligence, and Cybersecurity.
In 2017, DIAG was awarded as “Excellent Department” by the Italian Ministry for Education and Research (MIUR) based on the high-quality research, education and knowledge transfer activities performed over the last five years, and allowing special funding for new positions and laboratories.
