Type and length of courses	The duration of training in Medicine is 6 years (12 semesters) - the degree award is Magister and in Dentistry 5.5 year (11 semesters) the degree award is Magister for Health care - the degree award is Bacalaver - 1year and 6 months full time and 2 years and 6 months part time In the Medical College - 3 years.
Date of commencement	Each academic year starts about September 15 and finishes about June 30 the following year
Class size	In basic disciplines about 8 students, in the special disciplines about 4-5 students
Accommodation	Student accommodation is in the hotel-hostel houses of HMI with 880 beds in one- or two-bedded rooms, comfortably furnished and toilet facilities. Meals are provided for in restaurants of the hotel and in the refectory or canteens of different clinics, as well as in a chain of snack bars, refreshment rooms, shops etc.
Financial assistance	Grants are available for Bulgarian students only
Admission requirements	The foreign citizens applying to become students at HMI - Plovdiv must have a completed secondary education with grades 75% of the maximum ones for the respective country and they must present the following documents: 1. Certificate of completed secondary education 2. Birth certificate 3. Health certificate issued no earlier than 1 month prior to application 4. Document of maintenance (self-support) The documents (originals or certified copies) must be submitted to the Rectors office of the HMI - Plovdiv no later than August 30. A special admission Committee considers the applications and informs the candidates approved before the beginning of the school year. The candidates wishing to study in Bulgaria must study Bulgarian language in a 1-year preparatory course

About the Medical University

Plovdiv is the second biggest town in Bulgaria, one of the oldest in Europe with centuries-old history. It was founded by Philip II of Macedonia in the IVth c BC. Its pictures location is by the banks of the Maritsa River, around 7 unique stone hills in the centre of the Thrakian Plain, surrounded by the mighty ranges of the Balkan Mauntains in the north and the Rhodopa Mountain in the south. The town is an important administrative, civil, economic and cultural centre of the country with a population of over 500 000 inhabitants seat of a region developing intensive agriculture and mighty industry. There are 5 institutions of higher education in the town, as well as many other educational and cultural institutions.

The Medical University - Plovdiv was established in 1945. It includes Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry, a Medical College and a hospital of its own with 2000 beds. All departments considered indispensable for higher medical education according to modern standards are available - theoretical, pre-clinical and clinical, as well as laboratories, clinics and other units with modern equipment for diagnostic and treatment, research activities and training of medical and dental students.

Every year over 3800 Bulgarian and foreign students are trained at the Medical University - Plovdiv. The teaching staff includes 134 persons with academic range and 601 assistant professors and other specialists. In the last 5 years are edited 48 monographs. 1196 publications and 33 doctor-degree theses.

At students disposal in our Central University Library are more than 170 000 volumes in medicine in many languages; Internet hall and local net (available Medline and Micromedex); own journal - Folia Medica, which is exchanged with over 326 partners from over 54 countries, included in Medline.
