Master’s Programme in Mathematics
Bachelor graduates with good ideas and ambitions opt for the Master's programme in Mathematics: They have developed a "desire for more" during their undergraduate studies and are now planning a qualified career entry in research, in software companies, at banks, insurance companies, authorities or management consultancies.
Students who have obtained the Master of Science in Mathematics can recognize, classify, formulate and solve complex problems with a mathematical reference. The exact orientation of the Master's programme is based on the choice of mathematical focus and application subjects.
The central research focus of the Institute of Mathematics lies in current areas of analysis, computer algebra, optimization, stochastics and numerics. The special feature of mathematics at the University of Kassel is its computer and application orientation, which is particularly evident in interdisciplinary projects with the engineering sciences.
There are no admission restrictions. The language of instruction is English. Studies begin in the summer or winter semester.
All this is necessary, but not sufficient, as one would express it in mathematics: Personally, a high scientific and technical interest, a fundamentally analytical-logical way of thinking, perseverance and the best possible English skills for dealing with specialist literature are required.
On the subject of job perspectives: The fact that a classic profession of "mathematician" does not exist also results in many degrees of freedom. In fact, mathematics graduates are sought-after specialists in very different areas. Many doors are therefore opening, especially to well-paid management positions.
Studying mathematics in Kassel means a close integration of theory and practice. Great emphasis is placed on modern, algorithmic and computer-oriented aspects of mathematics and the practical application of mathematical techniques.
The programme is characterised by a great deal of freedom of choice. According to their personal interests, students select special lectures and seminars from the fields of analysis, algebra, discrete mathematics, numerics and stochastics as well as from their application focus. In addition, there is a six-month master's thesis, in which the students independently work on an advanced mathematical topic.
Reasons for studying mathematics in Kassel:
- Excellent student ratio
Close contact between students and teachers instead of anonymous mass events
- Unique combination of mathematics and applications
Ideal career entry opportunities through practice-oriented close integration of mathematics and applications
- Integration of internships and stays abroad
Our professors are well connected internationally and use their contacts to arrange internships and stays abroad

The University of Kassel
The University of Kassel is a young, modern and vibrant university, characterized by its openness to new ideas in every single area of its work. Receptivity, initiative, transdisciplinary thinking and unconventionality are traits we cherish and welcome in studies, research and teaching, but also in knowledge transfer and entrepreneurial ventures, to which the university provides special support. We aspire to develop, validate and implement ideas – even if they are not yet in the mainstream.
The University of Kassel has an unconventional profile with fields of expertise in nature, technology, culture and society. Questions relating to the future of our planet and our existence such as globalization, climate change, environmental protection as well as questions regarding the evolution of technical systems or demographic change are characteristic of our profile in both research and teaching.
With more than 23,000 students and approximately 1,800 scholars, among them more than 300 professors, the University of Kassel is one of Germany’s mid-sized universities. It plays a key role in the development of the northern Hesse region, but its profile also attracts many students and scholars from across Germany and abroad. We nurture creativity, critical analysis, ethical reflection and unconventional thinking.
Extending the development of academic fields beyond their boundaries is another marker for many University of Kassel research centers searching for sustainable answers to our most important questions. This focus offers scholars and scientists exciting challenges and also paves the way for students into their lives and careers.
The University of Kassel sees itself as a European university. It has an international focus and has networks around the world. Internationalization plays a central role in both courses and teaching, but also in research and in the transfer of knowledge.
Within its fields of competence, the University of Kassel has established the following focus areas:
- Technical system simulation - Industrial system technology
- Nanostructure and molecular sciences
- Educational research including university research
- National and global social policy, development policy and decent work
- Environment, climate and nutrition
- Energy supply systems of the future
- Culture and gender research
