Sustainable Development Management, M.A.

With the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), or the 2030 Agenda, the United Nations General Assembly sent out a strong signal for a new global community: Developing countries, emerging industrialised countries and industrialised countries together agreed to 17 ambitious goals for a better, more sustainable future for all countries.

Achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda will require highly qualified experts with a broad understanding of not only the field of sustainable development, but also the challenges and hurdles of bringing sustainability projects to fruition. Sustainable Development Management M.A. integrates and connects relevant various sections of economics and political science with the most relevance for sustainable development.

These components are then supplemented with empirical methods and project management skills. This unique combination imparts to you the qualifications needed to help shape not only academic discourse on sustainable development, but also ongoing and future projects in the field.

Courses are aligned with the typical project cycle, meaning you will learn how to successfully plan and implement sustainable development projects as well as critically evaluate the results.

In addition, the study program is part of AGEP (Association of Postgraduate Programs with special Relevance to Developing Countries), a consortium of over 50 German postgraduate programs spanning fields such as natural, engineering, regional, environmental and agricultural sciences, as well as social and economic sciences, and human medicine.

Career Paths

Due to the comprehensive nature of this degree programme with its combined focus on the political and economic aspects of sustainable development, as well as the communication and intercultural skills stressed throughout the programme, new graduates enjoy a variety of potential career paths:
  • Public institutions at the national level: Governments and ministries responsible for regulating development in developing and emerging countries
  • Bi-lateral and multi-lateral development organisations in the public sectors
  • Private sector firms specialising in consulting services, collaboration in technology or investment
  • Doctoral and postgraduate programmes

EPOS Scholarship

EPOS is short for "Entwicklungsbezogene Postgraduierten Studiengänge" (development-related postgraduate courses). Since 1987 the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) funds a number of scholarships for students from developing countries who would like to study in Germany in development-related subjects. For more information on the overall programme, please click here.

The master's degree programme "Sustainable Development Management" is part of EPOS and can therefore award a number of scholarships to students from developing countries every year.

The application period for the EPOS scholarships lasts every year from May 1st to June 1st.

The scholarship application process is separate from the general application process for the study programme. This means that if your scholarship application is rejected and you want to enroll in the degree program without scholarship, you must apply again during one of the regular application periods (through uni-assist; deadlines January 15th/July 15th), see applications and admission. The scholarship nominations are expected to be communicated until the end of September.

The start of your studies will then either be in March (summer semester) or next years’ September (winter semester).

Applications must be submitted to uni-assist. Please do not send applications to the university administration or to DAAD. Applications that are not submitted via uni-assist will not be considered.
